Power Systems Studies
Energy and Power Engineering is a Texas professional engineering firm specializing in short circuit, coordination, and arc flash studies, protective relay settings, and load and power quality studies — for healthcare, mission-critical, industrial, and commercial facilities.
What we do
Studies that hold up — to the AHJ, the inspector, and the field.
Short Circuit, Coordination & Arc Flash
Complete power system analysis: fault duty vs. equipment ratings, selective coordination with engineered TCCs, incident energy calculations, and field-installed arc flash labels. Our flagship study, delivered as a PE reviewed report your team can act on.
Load Studies & Metering
30-day recorded metering to document existing demand and prove spare capacity for additions — we supply, install, and remove the meters, then deliver the engineering analysis.
Protective Relay Settings
Settings development and review across the full protection scheme — from feeder and differential to generator, motor, and automatic rollover — coordinated with the utility and documented for commissioning.
Power Quality Investigations
Harmonics, voltage sags, and nuisance-tripping investigations — recorded data, root cause, and fixes ranked by cost and effectiveness.
One-Line Development
Field-verified single-line diagrams for facilities whose drawings no longer match the gear — or have no one-lines at all. The foundation every other study stands on.
Field Engineering Support
Job walks, data collection, breaker settings verification against the study, and engineering support during energization and commissioning.
Who we serve
From neighborhood clinics to Fortune 100 campuses.
Our studies protect people and equipment in occupied, operating facilities — places where shutdown windows are short and the answers have to be right the first time.
How it works
- Scope & quote.
Send a one-line or drawings; quotes typically same or next business day.
- Data collection.
Our engineers walk the site, or your crew fills our data request sheet — whichever your schedule needs.
- Model & study.
Full SKM PowerTools model; typical studies deliver in 7–10 business days, varying with system size.
- Report & labels.
P.E.-reviewed report with one-lines, TCCs, and findings. Arc flash labels are printed and installed by our engineers.
- Close-out support.
Breaker settings verification, AHJ questions, and revisions as the project evolves.
Services
Engineering scope, in plain terms.
Every engagement ends in a document a non-engineer can act on: what we found, what passes, what doesn't, and exactly what to change. Findings cite the governing standard — IEEE 1584, NFPA 70E, the NEC, NESC — so they hold up in front of an AHJ or an inspector.
Short Circuit, Coordination & Arc Flash Study
SKM model of the full system from the utility to the panel level. Device evaluation against available fault current (NEC 110.9/110.10), selective coordination TCCs with recommended settings, IEEE 1584-2018 incident energy at every study location, and NFPA 70E-compliant labels printed and installed by our engineers. Includes revision support for review comments.
Load Study for Service Capacity
When you're adding load to an existing service, NEC 220.87 lets 30 days of recorded maximum demand stand in place of calculated loads. We furnish and install recording meters, capture the interval data, and deliver the stamped determination showing the capacity available for your system.
Protective Relay Settings
Settings files for the full range of protection schemes — transformer and bus differential, distance, feeder, recloser, generator, motor, main-tie-main, and automatic rollover — developed from the coordination study and coordinated with the serving utility's protection group. Reviewed against manufacturer limits and documented for the commissioning technician.
Power Quality Study
Power quality metering of harmonics, voltage sags and swells, transients, and unexplained tripping. The report identifies the source, quantifies it against IEEE limits, and ranks corrections by cost.
Electrical One-Line Development
We walk the facility, open the gear, and produce as-built one-line diagrams that match reality — deliverable as PDF and CAD-compatible files. Frequently bundled with an arc flash study, where it's required groundwork anyway.
Field Engineering Support
Breaker settings implementation and verification, generator and transfer-switch commissioning support, and engineering presence for utility shutdowns and energizations.
Quote Request
Tell us about the system. We'll take it from there.
This is the fastest way to get a quote or start a study. Fill in what you know — partial information is fine, and our engineers will identify anything else the study needs during the job walk.
